Guides and checks

  • Buying logs

    The Ready to Burn check

Bags and loads under 2 cubic metres must be certified at 20% moisture or less. Check what the seller should show you, what kiln-dried and seasoned mean, and how to test logs at home.

  • Buying a stove

A stove for a West Country home

Smoke control areas council by council, Ecodesign and exempt stoves, sizing, registered installers, building regulations and carbon monoxide alarms.

  • Sweeping

    How often should you sweep?

The bodies don't agree. For wood, the figures range from once a year to every three months. See them side by side.

How often should you sweep a chimney for wood?

Here's what each body says, in its own words. NACS says the right interval depends on the fuel, the appliance, how long it's used, how wet the wood is and the type of chimney, and that your sweep can advise.NACS advice

    1. Quarterly when in use

      NACS, sweeps' trade association

    2. Every three months

Devon & Somerset Fire & Rescue, fire and rescue service

    3. At least twice a year

      HETAS, solid fuel trade body

    4. Twice a year when used regularly

Institute of Chimney Sweeps, sweeps' trade body

    5. At least once a year (any fuel)

      Defra, government department

    The sweeping year

The busiest months are September, October and November. A gentle nudge: book a little ahead of them.

    1. January
    2. February
    3. March
    4. April
    5. May
    6. June
    7. July
    8. August
    9. September, busiest
    10. October, busiest
    11. November, busiest
    12. December

Busiest months, as we expect them. It's our estimate of when people look for a sweep, not a count of bookings.

A once-a-year reminder is planned. It isn't ready yet.

The firms we've checked: 14 so far

This is not every sweep or stove fitter in Wiltshire and Somerset. It's the 14 we've looked into. For each membership a firm claims, we looked for it on the trade body's own register. 7 of the 14 have at least one membership we found on a register.

To search more widely, use the bodies' own registers: HETAS, National Association of Chimney Sweeps, Association of Professional and Independent Chimney Sweeps, Guild of Master Chimney Sweeps and Sweep Safe.

Checked 14/10/2026. "On its register" means the body's register lists the firm with a matching phone number or website. "Named on a register entry" means another body's register entry names the membership. "Firm's own site only" means we couldn't find a matching register entry, so check with the body.
